How to Choose the Right Heavy Duty Shelving Rack
Pick your shelving based on load per level, available height, and whether you need tools for assembly. Most home garages do fine with our boltless 250 kg range, while warehouses and commercial stock rooms usually need the bolted 300 kg matte black system.
What load capacity do I actually need?
Add up the heaviest items you'll store on a single shelf, not the whole unit. If you're storing power tools, paint tins, or boxed stock, 250 kg per level usually covers it. For pallets, engine parts, or bulk stock, go with the 300 kg bolted range.
How much height and depth do I need?
Standard units are 2 m high with 500 mm or 600 mm depth. If your ceiling allows it, the 2.5m industrial height gets you an extra shelf level in the same footprint, which is worth it if floor space is tight.
Boltless or bolted, which is better?
Boltless heavy duty shelving is faster to assemble and works well for garages and light commercial use. Bolted matte black units use a reinforced frame and adjust every 75mm, so they suit warehouses where the shelving takes daily knocks from forklifts or trolleys. For long warehouse runs, we also stock 20ft container shelving and 40ft container shelving built to fit standard container dimensions.
Why Central Concepts for Heavy Duty Shelving in NZ
We're a NZ owned and operated business based in Feilding, and we've been supplying storage and racking solutions to garages, warehouses, and trade businesses across the country. Our team handles the sourcing, quality checks, and delivery ourselves, so we know exactly what goes into every heavy duty shelving unit we sell.
A few things we stand behind:
- Real weight ratings. Every shelf level is rated 250 kg or 300 kg, tested per level, not just an average across the whole bay.
- Powder-coated finish. Protects against rust, which matters if your shelving is going in a garage or an uninsulated shed.
- 2-year warranty on every unit, no fine print tricks.
- Extendable design. Most units let you bolt on extra bays later instead of buying a whole new system.
If you're not sure which heavy-duty shelving unit fits your space, call us on 021 0875 9476 or send us your dimensions, and we'll point you to the right size.
Still Not Sure Which Size You Need?
Send us your space dimensions and what you're storing, and our team will recommend the right heavy-duty shelving unit for you, free of charge. Setting up a full workspace? Check out our work benches and stainless steel benches to go with it.
Frequently Asked Questions - Heavy Duty Shelving NZ
What weight capacity does your heavy duty shelving hold?
Our heavy duty shelving range supports between 250kg and 300kg per shelf level, depending on the model. The standard boltless range handles 250kg per level, while the bolted matte black range steps up to 300kg per level — giving you up to 1,200kg total storage capacity per bay. Weight should always be evenly distributed across the shelf for best results.
What sizes are available?
We stock heavy duty shelving from 1.5m right through to 12m in length, including popular sizes like 2m, 3m, 4m, 5m, 6m and 8m. Heights range from the standard 2m up to 2.5m for industrial and warehouse applications. Units are available in depths of 500mm and 600mm. Can't find your size? Many units are extendable — you can add on bays to reach your required length.
Do I need tools to assemble the shelving?
Most of our shelving units are boltless and require no tools - shelves simply slot into the uprights in minutes. Our bolted matte black range uses a bolt-together system and comes with all nuts and bolts included, making it quick and simple to assemble. Both systems can be set up by one or two people without specialist knowledge.
What's the difference between the standard and bolted/matte black shelving?
Our standard range is boltless, available in black, blue, and white, and is ideal for garages, workshops, and general storage. The bolted matte black range uses a reinforced bolt-together frame for heavier industrial use, with a higher 300kg per level capacity and shelf height adjustability every 75mm. It's the better choice for demanding warehouse or commercial environments.
Do you deliver heavy duty shelving throughout New Zealand?
Yes - we ship NZ wide. Free delivery is available to the North Island. South Island delivery is available at an additional cost. You can also pick up from our Feilding location at 14 Awa Street, Monday to Friday, 8am–4:30pm.
What can the heavy duty shelves be used for?
Our shelving is used across a wide range of applications including garages, home workshops, warehouses, factories, retail stockrooms, and shipping containers. We stock dedicated container shelving sized to fit both 20ft (5.85m) and 40ft (12m) containers. Whether you're organising tools at home or managing inventory in a commercial space, there's a unit in our range to suit.
Can I extend my shelving unit later?
Yes - most of our units are extendable. You can purchase add-on bays to increase the length of your shelving run over time, rather than having to replace the entire unit. This makes Central Concepts shelving a smart long-term investment as your storage needs grow.
Is heavy duty shelving adjustable?
Yes. All our heavy duty shelving is adjustable in height; most models are every 75 mm to 100 mm depending on the range. You can reposition shelf levels without tools on the boltless range or loosen the bolts on the matte black range to reset shelf spacing as your storage needs change.
Can heavy duty shelving be used outdoors?
Our shelving is powder coated to resist rust, which helps in uninsulated garages, sheds, and covered outdoor areas. For fully exposed outdoor use, we'd recommend a covered structure over the unit since prolonged rain exposure will still shorten its lifespan.
