How to Pick the Right Pallet Racking Size
The short version: measure your ceiling height, your floor footprint, and your heaviest pallet load before you order anything.
Getting the size wrong is the most common mistake we see with pallet racking solutions bought online without a proper site check. A bay that's too tall for your ceiling clearance is a wasted purchase. A bay that's too short leaves usable air space empty above it. Before you choose a size, walk through these steps.
- Measure your ceiling height and subtract at least 300mm for sprinkler clearance and forklift mast height.
- Check your floor footprint. Multiple bays connected in a run share upright frames, which saves both space and cost.
- Confirm your heaviest pallet weight. All our bays hold 2 tonnes per level, but always load within rated limits per level, not per bay.
- Decide on aisle width based on the forklift or pallet jack you're using day to day.
- Think about future stock changes. Adjustable beams mean you're not stuck if your inventory shifts next year.
Not sure which size fits your space? Our team talks through layouts with customers regularly, and we're happy to do the same for you. Contact us here with your rough dimensions and we'll point you toward the right bay.
Pallet Racking vs. Heavy Duty Shelving: What's the Difference
Pallet racking is built for palletized loads moved by forklifts. Heavy-duty shelving suits hand-loaded items and smaller boxed stock.
If you're moving stock on pallets, racking is the right call every time. It's designed for that forklift clearance and load spread. If you're hand-stacking boxes, tools, or smaller inventory, our Heavy Duty Shelving range is a better fit and usually more cost-effective for that use case.
Some warehouses run both side by side as part of a wider warehouse racking layout. Pallet racking near the loading dock for pallets and shelving further back for picked stock. It's a common setup and one worth planning for early.
Add-Ons Worth Considering
A bay of heavy duty pallet racks on its own is a good start. A few extras turn it into a complete pallet racking solution for your site.
- Wire mesh caging levels add containment for loose or irregular stock and help stop items falling through open levels.
- Dangerous goods storage is worth a look if any part of your inventory needs compliant, segregated storage under NZ regulations.
- Spill pallets pair well with racking setups holding drums or containers with fluid risk.
These aren't upsells for the sake of it. We recommend them because customers ask about exactly these problems on a regular basis: stock falling through gaps or needing to keep hazardous items compliant and separated.

Why Choose Our Heavy Duty Pallet Racking
Short answer: it's built for load capacity, adjustability, and fast delivery across New Zealand.
We don't sell heavy duty pallet racks that look good in a photo and buckle under real weight. Each system uses boltless, adjustable beam levels, so you can reconfigure shelf heights as your stock changes. That matters more than people expect. Most warehouses don't store the same-size boxes forever.
Here's what stands behind every bay we sell:
- 2-tonne per level rating on all standard bays, tested for consistent daily use.
- Adjustable beam heights so you're not locked into one configuration.
- 900mm depth as standard, matched to common NZ pallet sizes.
- Wire mesh caging options are available for bays that need extra containment or fall protection.
- 100% NZ owned and operated, with stock held locally rather than shipped in on demand.
If you've ever waited six weeks for racking to clear customs, you'll understand why local stock matters.
